Flat or
ball nose?

Geometry should follow the cut. A flat end mill is the practical first choice for square shoulders, slots, pockets and general profiling. A ball-nose tool is intended for 3D surfaces, radii and finishing where a square corner is not required.

Match the cutter diameter and shank to the holder, then confirm cutting length, overall length and flute clearance. Extra reach adds leverage and chatter risk, so use only the length the job needs.
